Artist Statement
LOST HORIZONS is a title I intended to use years ago for an art exhibition about
rising sea levels. I was thinking about how our collective horizons will literally
change. But now, post COVID, amid so many mini-revolutions in culture and in
consciousness, this title has taken on new meaning for me. The original “LOST
HORIZON,” is a book written by James Milton, set in Shangri-la, a Utopian community
high up in the mountains. From this mystical, remote location, the characters
hold precious space for hope and inspiration on the planet as World War II rages below.

At the time of making work for this exhibition, there is, once again, a lot of uncertainty
on the planet. I am burrowing down, deep within to find inner resources of
hope and regeneration. I think of the supportive root systems of trees that seek a
different, invisible horizon beneath this Earth. They interconnect with other roots
and rhizomes, minerals and materials, spreading a new foundation before rebirth
in Spring. I’ve spent time this winter in the woods, with my hands on the ground
and also in the clay receiving generous energies beneath the surface to give me
strength.

Through meditation, time alone in nature, and quiet art-making, I collected and created
images and objects in ceramics for this exhibition.
